What is Wool?

Wool refers to natural fabrics got from the hairs of sheep and spun into yarns to make warm clothing for comfort during winter.

Wool is popular for its thermally insulating property and durability. However, these vary depending on the variety of hairs of the sheep. Wool is the second most used (not only in India but also in every part of the world) natural fabric next to cotton.

This natural fabric comprises 97% protein and 3% fat that are helping it to become unique for certain types of applications. It also has several attributes, for example, natural crimps that contribute to wool insulating properties. The largeness of wool naturally taps air.

Wool Variety

There are various types of wool available, and here are some of the common varieties.

1. Merino Wool

This one is the most used wool across the world and collected from merino sheep hugely used to produce varieties of industrial material and garments. It comes in 20 microns that makes excellent products.

2. Cashmere Wool

This one is the most expensive variety of wool originated from furry goats of the Kashmir region. And the reason behind the high price is simply that each Kashmiri goat produces only 15 grams of wool per year on averagely.

3. Mohair Wool

This variety of wool is obtained from the angora goat, which has wavy and thick hair known for naturally highly crimp woollen textiles.

A few more varieties of wool can be found, such as Alpaca Wool, Camel Wool, Virgin Wool, Angora Wool, Vicuna Wool, Llama Wool and Qiviut Wool.

How is wool produced?

The process of making wool begins with shearing the hair or raw material of wool from wool-bearing animals. While some of the species bear wool only once a year, others bear wool several times per year.

After shearing, the wool fibres get cleaned and sorted into bales of a specific amount. There are several methods of removing the greasy lanolin in raw wool. But the most used process by large wool manufacturers is using chemical catalysts.

Next to cleaning and sorting the wool, they are carded. It is the practice of transforming the fibres into long strands. Once after that, the strands are spun into yarn. And subsequently, a final washing gets done before the yarn are woven into types of textiles and garments.

The finished textiles maybe go through a few post-production processes too to develop certain attributes.
